Domestic abuse remains one of the most serious and widespread safeguarding issues in the UK. In England and Wales alone, an estimated 3.8 million adults experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2025, including 2.2 million women and 1.5 million men. Women remain disproportionately affected, representing over 72% of police-recorded domestic abuse crime victims. The figures also show the extreme end of this harm: on average, one woman is killed by a partner or ex-partner every five days in England and Wales.
